In today’s world, the likelihood of an impromptu elevator conversation is low. Even if you find yourself in a building, you’re likely wearing a mask and standing a dolphin’s length away from everyone.

This is just one of many reasons why a video version of your elevator pitch is an important piece of content to have. Here is mine. Click on the video, audio, or text version to share yours with me and I’ll message you back.

Here are some tips to help you create your video elevator pitch

  1. Lighting - If you’re not a photographer and you don’t have the budget to hire one, what you need to do is find a big window. Shoot when the light coming in is bright but not direct, i.e. the sun should not be beaming through. Think big bright source. This will serve as a giant lightbox. You know you have it right if your skin looks glowy and there is a catchlight in your eyes.

  2. Background - You have two options. 1. Style out your background with a set. 2. Use a backdrop. Both can work great. If you create a set, make sure everything moves the viewer back to your face. If you’re using a background, make sure hair or head is not disappearing when you move or because they are the same color. The goal is to keep the focus on you.

  3. Script - Have one. Don’t wing it. You need a script that makes it easy for people to identify themselves with the problems you solve. Once you have one, practice it 20-30 times before you get in front of the camera.
